Pancakes
Pancakes are eaten all over the world, but their approach is different everywhere. For example, Russia has the blinis and in France they have crepes. The Dutch pancakes also differ from the American pancakes. They are flatter and larger. Where the American pancakes are eaten for breakfast, we often eat them in Holland as a meal. A traditional Dutch pancake is eaten with poured syrup and icing sugar, but by now many more delicious toppings have been discovered. If you're a sweet tooth, then a pancake with apples, apple sauce, jam or nutella is highly recommended as a variation. Do you like savory flavors more? Poffertjes
Poffertjes really belong to the Dutch snacks specialties. How can we best describe poffertjes for people who don’t know them? Poffertjes are actually a kind of Dutch mini pancakes, but they are more fluffy. Most children love them, but they are also a tasty snack for adults. The poffertjes are baked in a special poffertjes pan, here they are baked delicious brown, cooked and crispy, but they still remain soft and airy. The best way to eat the poffertjes is by sprinkling them with icing sugar and melting a knob of butter. Mmm... are you getting hungry yet?
How to make your own pancakes and poffertjes
Did you know that 90% of the Dutch people prefer homemade pancakes? Fortunately, these are easy to make yourself. The basic recipe for pancakes consists of 2 eggs, 250 gr flour, 500 ml milk and a pinch of salt. In contrast to the pancakes, Poffertjes are a little less easy to make at home. In the Netherlands, the poffertjes are baked in a special poffertjes pan, this ensures that the poffertjes get the small round and convex shape.
